The history of the Molokai Education Center spans back to the 1970’s. The first classes were offered in Hotel Operations and Liberal Arts at Kaunakakai Elementary School. The Molokai Agriculture Farm was acquired in 1982. Agriculture was the first onsite full-time college degree program accessible to Molokai residents. Enrollment doubled when the first campus was established in a rented space in Kaunakakai town in 1986.
The dream of establishing a permanent facility on Molokai became a reality in 1999. The permanent facility has made way for increases in enrollment and diversification of program offerings. With a combination of on-site course offerings and distance learning support, the Molokai Education Center serves as a hub for all University of Hawaii programs on Molokai. This includes credit and non-credit opportunities spanning from certificates through graduate degrees.
In addition to offering academic programming, the Molokai Education Center also supports the advancement of the Molokai community through career exploration and workforce development. The staff work in unison to advance the mission of the program; “E hoʻonaʻauao honua ʻoiai ma ka hale - A world of knowledge here at home.”
